Body Shapes explained: V Shape

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

V shape or inverted triangle: what to wear and what to avoid

If you are V shaped:

  • Your shoulders are wider than your hips

  • You often wear a size (or two) larger on the top

  • You have a strong or an athletic build

  • You may struggle to look and feel feminine in clothes

  • Weight gain is mostly above the waist, not on the hips or thighs

Body shapes V shape

You will look great in:

  • Straight or wide leg pants/jeans, flared or bootleg styles.

  • Low to medium waist pants

  • Halter necks, raglan sleeves, V necks

  • Print or detail on lower half of body

  • Darker coloured plain tops

  • Tunics or long tops coming to mid-hip or longer

  • Cuffed sleeves

  • Double-breasted jackets

Avoid:

  • Shoulder detail like seams, colour-blocking or epaulettes; shoulder pads

  • Frills and flounces, gathered waists, soft/floppy fabrics

  • Tops in shiny fabric; white shirts

  • Puffy sleeves

  • Wide-open necklines (showing a lot of chest), one-shoulder garments

  • Careful with skinny jeans as they can make your bottom half look even smaller

  • A-line skirts: you don't have the hips to fill them.

Goal:

  • Softening your shoulders

  • Creating a more feminine silhouette

Alterations:

Buy upper garments to fit shoulders and have body taken in, or buy trousers to fit the waist and have hips/thighs taken in
