Can I wear a pixie cut?

Writer: Karin DavidsonKarin Davidson

The thought of changing your hair style or colour can be nerve-racking at the best of times. What if it looks terrible? What if I don't look like me anymore? Very short hair also has the added danger of looking too masculine.

So when a client asked me if she could get a pixie cut, I had to make sure I had my facts straight before answering, especially since her hairdresser was adamant that it would not suit her.

Here are the facts.

Firstly, in order to look good in a pixie cut, you need to have a good dose of certain facial features, including:

  1. Large eyes

  2. Curved eyebrows

  3. Prominent/high cheekbones

  4. A smaller nose

  5. Full lips

Secondly, according to John Frieda, the placement of your ears is very important: your earlobe should sit no more than 5.5cm above the bottom of your chin, when measured looking straight ahead (chin parallel to the floor).

Lastly, pixie cuts should generally be avoided if you are very tall or have a very round face.

As you can see below, Grainne has several of the desirable features for a pixie cut: she has ENORMOUS eyes, a small nose and strong cheekbones. She also happens to be petite (not tall) and has a square face (not round).

She also has curly hair, which will soften the look and prevent her from looking too masculine.

So the only question remaining is: are her earlobes less than 5.5cm above her chin? Let's have a look. It's a bit hard to see her ears in the photo because of her hair, but you will see them in the "after" photos.

Grainne decided to trust me and went for the chop. Let's see the results!

What do you think?

If you are contemplating a short hairstyle, and you have the right facial features to pull it off, then don't hesitate! A short hairstyle can take years off your face and add a lot of oomph to your overall look.
